The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on economies around the world, with China being one of the first countries to both experience the virus and begin the process of recovery. While China has demonstrated strong resilience, the pandemic has exacerbated existing regional economic disparities. Coastal provinces like Guangdong and Jiangsu, which are more developed and heavily reliant on international trade, were initially hit hard but have rebounded swiftly due to their diversified economies and infrastructure. In contrast, inland regions such as Guizhou and Yunnan, which have traditionally lagged behind in terms of economic development, have faced a slower recovery, struggling with limited access to healthcare, digital resources, and infrastructure. This paper explores the mechanisms through which the pandemic has amplified these regional inequalities, including supply chain disruptions, the uneven distribution of fiscal stimulus, and varying public health responses. It also examines policy responses aimed at reducing these disparities and suggests strategic directions for fostering more balanced regional development in China. The findings highlight the need for targeted investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and technology in less developed regions, as well as stronger social safety nets to ensure more equitable growth in the post-pandemic era.
